Hardiness level Green
From the woodlands of China, Japan and Korea. This small tree is broad-crowned and deciduous with diamond shaped leaves. Masses of beautiful bell-shaped white flowers, fragrant and beloved of bees, hang below the sweeping branches. It could reach 12m x 8m, but can be kept smaller.
We like a good fan-shaped tree, and we’re ever such a fan of Styrax japonicus. It's quite unusual, not frequently grown, and you need at least one, trust us. Its shape will add contrasting form to a garden of globes, spires, mounds and blobs. Our designers might plant one where it can admire itself in the reflection of a pool, its branches outstretched over the surface to reflect the bashful flowers. Looks equally special as well among a playful composition of tightly-clipped and rounded, mounded shrubs. These can roll solidly beneath, and emphasise its capricious, swaying grace.
A sunny spot will be appreciated, but it’s also happy in light shade. Good in a sheltered spot out of the cold winds on acid to neutral clay, loam or sandy soil that is moist but well drained.
N.B. When clipping several plants with the same tool, have a bucket containing a 5% bleach solution and swish your blades around for 30 seconds between plants to sterilise them. This will help avoid the chance of cross contamination of disease.
As with all woody plants, plant high, exposing as much of the taper at the base of the trunk as possible. Allowing soil to accumulate round the base of a tree can be fatal. Keep very well watered when first planted.
