Rhododendron graziella

From 42.50 incl. VAT

The texture is startling. You look at it and instantly fail to recognise it as a Rhododendron. Tight and rounded with pointy leaves. Purple flowers – if you allow them.

Adwarf and obscure form of Rhododendron ponticum. The purple flowers and the toughness are the giveaway - otherwise, it bears little resemblance to the brute called Ponticum.

The narrowness of the leaves and their star-like arrangement around the shoots is what gives this plant its unique appeal. A mounded shape is desirable - best accomplished by cutting out individual shoots with a pair of secateurs. Could reach 4 ft x 4 ft after 6 to 8 years.

Always in short supply.

Propagated by cuttings.

Rhododendrons require deep, rich, acid soil with good drainage in light dappled shade. Heavy shade will reduce flowering.

N.B. When clipping several plants with the same tool, have a bucket containing a 5% bleach solution and swish your blades around for 30 seconds between plants to sterilise them. This will help avoid the chance of cross contamination of disease.

As with all woody plants, plant high, exposing as much of the taper at the base of the trunk as possible. Allowing soil to accumulate round the base of a tree can be fatal. Keep very well watered when first planted.
