Platanus x hispanica (London Plane)
A huge and unbelievably tough deciduous tree that’s as happy in London as Malaga. We sell it trained with a flat top to create a formal matrix with a continental air. Please contact us for stock availability and sizes.
Hardiness level Green
A magnificent, large deciduous tree with beautiful flaking grey and cream bark. Easy to grow in moist, humus-rich, fertile soil. Inconspicuous flowers are followed by clustered, burr-like fruits.
Full sun needed. With table tops, keeping the foliage kept clipped restricts their root growth which is advantageous if planting in the vicinity of buildings. Vigorous and possibly disruptive root systems are mostly only an issue with full grown mature trees.
Will get to 3.6m/12m in height by 8m/2.4m spread.
N.B. When clipping several plants with the same tool, have a bucket containing a 5% bleach solution and swish your blades around for 30 seconds between plants to sterilise them. This will help avoid the chance of cross contamination of disease.
As with all woody plants, plant high, exposing as much of the taper at the base of the trunk as possible. Allowing soil to accumulate round the base of a tree can be fatal. Keep very well watered when first planted.
