Photinia glabra (Japanese Photinia)
A clever idea from Italy – a bush grafted onto a trunk producing a tidy little evergreen tree with new growth that’s red and frothy with white flowers in May. Please contact us for stock availability and sizes.
Hardiness level Green
Sun or semi-shade in fertile well-drained soil. Protect from strong, cold winds. This little tree has the remarkable ability to produce its new growth in what appears to be the middle of winter (February/early March). With any other plant this new growth would be blackened immediately by the next frost - in the case of Photinia glabra, it remains totally unaffected by frost.
N.B. When clipping several plants with the same tool, have a bucket containing a 5% bleach solution and swish your blades around for 30 seconds between plants to sterilise them. This will help avoid the chance of cross contamination of disease.
As with all woody plants, plant high, exposing as much of the taper at the base of the trunk as possible. Allowing soil to accumulate round the base of a tree can be fatal. Keep very well watered when first planted.
