A tall prairie grass from North America. This is a gutsy grass with slender arching grey-green blades in chunky swathes. Tall enough to be considered properly architectural at up to 2.7 metres. Towards the end of summer plumes of frothy flowers will appear.
Grasses are an essential addition to any garden and Panicum Virgatum must be one of the top choices. Imposing and structural yet managing to be light and full of movement. The slightest of breezes will cause ripples and shivvers. Not evergreen, but fully hardy nonetheless. Leave the stems standing through winter as there’s no need to chop them yet. Though spent, they retain their impressive silhouette and look magical when rimed with frost. Cut back in early spring.
