Small grassy and evergreen with trembly spikes of tawny grassy flowers in spring. Luzula spicata is a really useful and pretty clump-forming perennial that suits moist (and most) spots in the garden because it’s very adaptable. Plant this in sun to shade, and as long as it has good drainage and an acid to neutral soil it will thicken and spread steadily. Being adaptable, it’s also a very low-maintenance plant and you won’t have to fuss or fret over it. Do other things over it instead: it’s rather petite and doesn’t mind having bigger stuff looming above so you can establish a swathe of rich green grassy carpeting under all your specimen trees and shrubs if you like. This plant is essential for any respectable woodland or Japanese-themed setting as their flat, arched blades are highly textural and are a great contrast to broader-leaved perennials and the fluffy froth of ferns. Such mixes are magical and look effortlessly wild. Should you want a little more discipline, it also looks trim lining razor-sharp pathways and neatly softening the edges of paving, too
