Evergreen, grassy and clump-forming perennial with year-round interest and an architectural hit. You could accuse it of being from New Zealand with these characteristics, as all the really good garden plants tend to be from there.

Evergreen, grassy and clump-forming perennial with year-round interest and an architectural hit. We love this adaptable and versatile plant from New Zealand. Tall fresh-green with spikes of lovely white flowers that will be thrust aloft in summer and these crisply-white and orchid-like blooms are always a surprise. Water it lots (don't drown) and you’ll get more of them. Libertia grandiflora makes quite a lofty specimen over time, reaching around 1m high, so they make a really decent impact in the mid tiers of a mixed border where their blade-like leaves contrast wonderfully with more rounded, less whooshing forms. Also great for getting some height and evergreen movement into prairie style plantings, which can be more seasonally dynamic and invariably need some anchoring structure. Prefers a sheltered -south or west-facing position but manages happily in loam or clay soils that aren't waterlogged. Strip out tatty leaves in spring.
