Euphorbia wulfenii (Spurge)

Very recognisable evergreen shrub with a chalky-blue cast to their slender leaves.
Hardiness level Green
Very recognisable evergreen shrub with a chalky-blue cast to their slender leaves. This is called ‘glaucous’ and looks especially wonderful when their lime-green flowers pop out in spring. The mat texture of the feathery stems, and it's moundy shape, are what makes this plant so tasty.
Not small but not massive either but can be variable: expect a height of 2 foot or so in full sun. My own, in dappled shade, has reached skyward and leaves my chest speckled with dew as I brush through it. It’s louche and lax and very pretty. Saying this, It'll grow almost anywhere but really does like masses of light - it’ll stay tighter, all rounded and mounded- this way, and it definitely wants a well drained soil.
Like all Euphorbias, the flowers are weird (little yellowy/green Shrek's ears) and although most people like them, they do nothing for the shape of the plant once they're gone and their removal is always an option...
Also, like all Euphorbias, the milky white sap is irritating so don't rub your eyes and wash your hands after you've been removing the flowers.

FAQs

1ft to 2ft each year but a fairly short-lived plant of five to seven years.
How do you take care of Euphorbia wulfenii?
It'll grow almost anywhere but really likes masses of light and moist, well-drained soil. Can grow to 3ft across to 2ft tall in full sun but considerably more in shade. The flowers are weird (little yellowy/green Shrek's ears) and although most people like them, they do nothing for the shape of the plant once they're gone and their removal is always an option. Also, the milky white sap is irritating so don't rub your eyes or your skin after you've been removing the flowers. Each upright shoot is biennial and should be pruned to its base in June or July. Pruning tidies the plant and rejuvenates it to some extent, and new shoots will be produced almost straight away. A fairly short-lived plant of five to seven years. Not a fan of cold winds.
