Formerly known as Stipa arundinacea. Fine, wavy grass from New Zealand with flower heads creating a reddish mist. 2ft x 2ft.
Hardiness level Green
A very fine grass from New Zealand with a wavy-hazy fountain of foliage and tall, ethereal flower heads that mass above it to create a reddish mist. Gets approximately two feet high and arches outwards on dense stalks to manage about the same in width. Another victim of ‘Taxonomists Fiddle’ for which the only known cure is tolerance. Used to be called Stipa arundinacea, which is only two syllables shorter frankly and it’s like a slightly larger version of the better known relative - Stipa tenuissima. Amy - our resident grass expert - thinks that Stipa tenuissima is for the sea side but this is more suitable for inland cottage gardens. We don’t argue with Amy.
