Koelreuteria paniculata ‘Coral Sun’

A small deciduous tree growing to around 4-5 metres high and doing this quite sedately. 20 years or so until maturity, and happy in any soil as long as it’s well-drained. This is a spectacular specimen tree at any size and age. For those with bijou plots it won’t ever take over or become a menace, and for those with acres to fill then plant a few for colour and contrast.

Stewartia monadelpha

A gorgeous hardy tree with peeling rusty coloured bark, white flowers like single camellias in early summer and brilliant red autumn colour. In the wilds this is a tall tree but in the UK generally only reach 8 metres. Can be grown in any soil that is moist but well drained in any aspect in sun to partial shade. Crataegus Laevigata ‘Paul’s Scarlet’

Perfect for the small garden, this round headed hardy tree can grow to 5 x 4metres over 20 years. The fully double pinky red flowers emerge in late May followed by bright red haws. Happy in full sun to partial shade on any soil and any site including coastal and polluted situations. Can be a bit slow to root our so stake when planting and prune lightly for the first year or so until thoroughly established. Decaisnea Fargesii

This is an amazing large shrub or small tree originally from eastern Asia to western China. It is deciduous and grows slowly to 4 x 4m. It has large pinnate leaves, racemes of small greenish flowers and then in the autumn it bears long, soft textured blue grey beans. The seeds are not edible but the sweet gelatinous pulp is a similar flavour to watermelon.

Position in full to sun to partial shade, in any sheltered position on a moist but well drained soil. Hardy in most winters to -10C. Can be seen at Wisley.

Cercidiphyllum Japonicum

A round-headed deciduous tree to 20metres. Masses of tiny pinkish flowers on bare branches in Spring. Red flushed heart-shaped green leaves turn flaming red and orange in autumn. The fallen leaves emit a sweet caramelly, sugary, biscuity scent when disturbed. In their native China and Japan, they grow in forest edges and wooded river margins. A shallow rooted tree, happy on any soil, best in south and west facing positions. Germinated seedlings can sometimes be found on bare soil around the tree.
