Ligustrum japonicum (Japanese Privet)
Evergreen Privet from Japan grown as a tree. Well behaved, masses of white flowers from July to September. To about 15ft. Any soil. Please contact us for stock availability and sizes.
Hardiness level Green
Similar to but smaller than the Cloud Tree (Ligustrum lucidum) and often confused with it. It also has darker green leaves than the Cloud Tree (which can grow to 40ft). In Britain this is unlikely to grow more than about 15ft - 20ft.
It benefits from having a good feed from time to time (to keep the nice dark green leaves) and is tolerant of any reasonably well drained soil including chalk.
Propagated by cuttings.
N.B. When clipping several plants with the same tool, have a bucket containing a 5% bleach solution and swish your blades around for 30 seconds between plants to sterilise them. This will help avoid the chance of cross contamination of disease.
As with all woody plants, plant high, exposing as much of the taper at the base of the trunk as possible. Allowing soil to accumulate round the base of a tree can be fatal. Keep very well watered when first planted.
